The head of the newly declared government says it aims to improve distribution of resources and undermine central authority claiming it has discriminated against the eastern region. The central government in Tripoli swiftly rejected the declaration. The announcement from the pro-autonomy movement comes months after it declared the eastern half of Libya to be an autonomous state called Barqa. The movement is backed by some militias and local tribes.
